Produce for Kids!

Recently, Pete Vissar (VCP with the SE region of Indiana) attended an event with the food council in his area, Food & Growers Association, to give children money to use at the Batesville Farmers Market. In addition, Becky Landes (VCP with the NE region of Indiana) volunteered at a similar event with her food council recently.

The Food & Growers Association recently had the opportunity to host a booth at the Batesville Farmers Market, where Pete spent the morning helping children ages 4–12 discover the deep variety of foods and products available from local farmers.

With support from Southeastern Indiana REMC, 110 children each received $5 to purchase fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers at the market. In total, the program put $550 directly into the hands of local farmers. The goal was to give children a hands-on opportunity to learn where their food comes from, meet and support the people who grow it and understand the importance of strengthening the local food system and economy.

It was a great morning of connecting children with local farmers and helping them see firsthand that the food they eat has a story and that they can play a role in supporting the farmers and businesses in their own community.
